East of England Co-op: building digital visibility across a trusted community brand

Subcontracted through Maika Global, I was the digital consultant who did the work, with visits to the Co-op’s head office in Suffolk to improve the existing website and put it in a far better place ahead of a much larger redesign in the coming years.

01 / Background

A local reputation the website had not kept pace with

East of England Co-op is one of the most established and trusted community businesses across East Anglia, operating a network of local stores, high street travel agencies and funeral homes that have served families in the region for generations. Their strength has always been local: personalised service, community roots and relationships built over time.

Their digital presence had not kept pace with that reputation. Key sections of the website worked largely as brochures or downloadable PDFs, confirming the Co-op existed rather than informing visitors, supporting their decisions or earning visibility in search.

Maika Global and I were engaged at a kick-off meeting in August 2025, with me subcontracted as the digital consultant carrying out the work. The brief was to improve the existing site across travel, funeral services, food and the store estate, so the business would not lose ground digitally and would be better placed to grow ahead of a much larger redesign.

02 / The challenge

Three sectors, three different problems

Each area of the Co-op’s digital estate presented its own distinct challenge.

1

Stores

Local visibility at scale. A wide network of stores across East Anglia, each serving distinct communities, yet the website offered little in the way of store descriptors to help nearby customers find them, understand what each location offered, or connect the Co-op brand to their local branch.

2

Travel

A market dominated by OTAs, aggregators and airlines with enormous budgets and authority. Competing head on was never the answer. Pages were thin, lacked structure around specific holiday types, and gave little sense of the personal, advisor-led service that sets the Co-op apart.

3

Funeral services

An emotive and highly sensitive area to work on, where tone, trust and clarity matter more than anything. Families searching for funeral support are often doing so at the hardest of times. The Co-op held deep local credibility, and the online presence needed to reflect that standing with care while supporting an active winter campaign.

03 / The approach

Depth and structure across all four areas

A content and SEO strategy developed and implemented across the site, with working sessions at head office in Suffolk alongside the Co-op’s own team.

1

Local store pages

Clear, well optimised local pages giving each location a proper digital presence, helping the right customers find their nearest Co-op store through search and understand what was available to them there.

2

Travel propositions

Dedicated pages for key propositions such as all inclusive holidays and short breaks, structured to perform in search and to reflect the quality of the in-branch experience, building the topical authority needed to earn visibility over time.

3

Funeral services, handled with care

This work had to tread carefully. Every page was re-written and reviewed with the sensitivity the subject demands: plain, compassionate language, clear practical guidance, and nothing that felt like selling. Within that, the SEO foundations and the winter campaign were supported so families could find the right information quickly when they needed it.

04 / Early results

Meaningful momentum, read honestly

Work began in September 2025 and the data is showing momentum across travel and funeral services.

April 2026 brought the most sessions ever recorded to the travel section. Seasonality had a clear bearing on the peaks and troughs, with holiday planning lifting January and quieter spells in November and February. Even so, the section finished at its highest point on record. The main travel landing page and contact page are among the most visited, and branch level pages are gaining steady traction, suggesting people are seeking the reassurance of a trusted, personal travel agent over booking independently.

Funeral services · An important caveat

A sensitive area, measured with care

The funeral services pages saw an uptick in traffic through the winter months. Demand in this area rises naturally in winter, and every provider sees more searches then regardless of their digital activity. Behind each of those searches is a family going through a loss, so it would be wrong to present that seasonal rise as a headline result.

What matters is that the pages were there when people needed them: visible for relevant searches, clear, compassionate in tone and properly supporting the wider winter campaign. Spring and summer will show the organic gains more cleanly, separated from seasonal effects.

05 / What’s next

Ready for the redesign, from a stronger position

With foundational content and optimisation in place across all four pillar services, the focus now shifts to building authority around specific service areas, refining the local store pages and expanding the travel content.

Alongside that comes a clearer picture of year-round performance, separating genuine SEO progress from the natural rhythms of seasonal demand, so the larger website redesign starts from evidence rather than assumption.
